Omega
has always been driven by a pioneering spirit; in fact, no watch
company in the world holds more records for accuracy. Their watches have
been the timepiece of choice for some of history’s greatest
explorers—from deep-sea divers to astronauts.
This
sporty and historic Speedmaster Apollo XI Moon Watch by Omega has
turned into a rare gem as of late, much celebrated, yet might be
challenging to obtain. This model is from around 1990, and has been
fairly well preserved. It is non-numbered production model (Serial #
482XXXXX).
For
those enamored with vintage pieces and Omega’s history of crafting
moon-ready workhorse watches, this historic piece ticks all the boxes.
First,
let’s look at the mechanical manual-winding hand-finished gilt
movement. Based upon the Lemania 1873 caliber the Omega 863 caliber is
famous for its durability, reliability, and attractive decoration with
high level finishing. You can see this movement in action and admire its
stylings via the sapphire crystal exhibition caseback.
Next
up, take note of the unique domed Hesalite crystal—this is a historic
nod to the non-shattering material favored by astronauts. Peer through
this crystal to the matte black dial and we encounter index lightly aged
tritium-coated hour markers and hands filled with tritium substance.
Elegant
slightly recessed patterned black subdials include a small seconds
counter at 9 as well as chronograph functions that include a 30-minute
counter at 3 and a 12-hour counter at 6. A handy tachymetre scale upon
the bezel can be used to calculate speeds.
The
stainless steel case measures 42 mm in diameter, 14.5 mm in height, and
rests upon a stainless steel bracelet with a folding clasp featuring
Speedmaster and Omega logos. Additional features include a push / pull
winding crown thoughtfully positioned within the case rim for better
stability and protection.
From
its rarity to its robust construction, this Omega Speedmaster Apollo XI
Moon Watch will make an essential and historic addition to your
collection.
Standout feature(s): Historic vintage model; robust hand-decorated Omega 863 caliber; Hesalite domed crystal; convenient tachymetre scale.
