Overlooking the shores of Lake Lugano—a gorgeous glacial lake at the
Swiss-Italian border—Swiss watch manufacturer Cuervo y Sobrinos creates
timepieces of note in a magnificent nineteenth-century villa. Theirs is a
rich, storied history of fine watchmaking. The brand may have been born
in Havana, Cuba, long ago, but today they take pride in being the only
Swiss fine watchmaking brand with a Latin tradition. This particular
model takes its name from the torpedo-style cigar.
Fascinating in its multitude of
offerings, you’ll find that this Cuervo y Sobrinos Torpedo "Pirata" does
it all—and more. The gorgeous dial is alive with a riot of functions.
First, there is a date chapter running along the outer edge of the
darkly brooding dial that can be read via the wider arm. In addition,
within the subdial at 12 you will find day and month windows.
There is a small seconds at 9, and
chronograph offerings include a center seconds hand, a 30-minute counter
at 12, and a 12-hour counter at 6, made even more enthralling by way of
the moon phase indicator within the subdial.
Skeletonized lacquered steel hour and
minute hands catch the eye and are luminous for low-light scenarios. In
the engine room we find CyS 3061 (based upon Valjoux 7751), which beats
at 28,800 vph, possesses 25 jewels, and can be viewed via the
exhibition case back.
The 45 mm-diameter case is composed
of an intriguing combination of bronze, titanium, and burnished steel
with a rugged PVD coating to resist scratches. Additional case features
include a 50 m / 5 atm water resistance, a screw-down winding crown, and
an antireflective scratch-resistant sapphire crystal. Also unique is
the black genuine ostrich strap with grey stitching and a brushed
titanium prong buckle with CyS’s engraved insignia upon the outer part.
An engrossing timepiece in every
regard, we are confident that this Torpedo "Pirata" Caribeno Barbanegra
Complete Calendar by Cuervo y Sobrinos will make an exceptional addition
to your collection.
