Universal Genève has a tradition of meticulous and advanced watchmaking that dates back to 1884. The Swiss brand is much admired for producing complete watches with in-house movements. Their chronographs of the 1940s / 50s are highly sought after, and in this same period they experienced phenomenal sales. It’s interesting to note that Gérald Genta designed their legendary Polerouter in 1954, a timepiece favored by Scandinavian Airlines’ pilots whose flight paths took them over the North Pole.

Inspired by the Universal Genève Cabriolet timepieces produced between 1927 and 1929, this Golden Janus celebrates the 100th anniversary of the brand: 1894–1994.

Measuring 26 x 42 mm (including the lugs and excluding the crowns) and a slim 9.5 mm in height, the case offers two silvered dials: one dial features the time with applied gold Roman numerals at 12, 3, 6, and 9 with leaf-shaped gold hands, while the other dial displays a jumping hour, a minute track with Arabic numerals at 15, 30, and 45, a day / night indicator, and a subdial at 6 that displays a date track. Note the reversible 1894 / 1994 stud at the bottom of the case.

This design proves to be a brilliant reference to the ancient Roman god Janus who had two faces, which allowed him to oversee the beginning and end of a conflict as well as preside over larger concepts, such as duality, time, and transitions in life.

This manually wound watch is driven by the UG 42 caliber. It possesses a brand-new Hirsh alligator leather strap with an 18K gold and stainless steel deployant buckle.
