Antoine LeCoultre opened his workshop in 1833, and by 1866 his large, modern atelier became recognized as the first manufacture in Switzerland’s Vallée de Joux. The Jaeger-LeCoultre brand, or JLC, was born in 1925 when Jacques-David LeCoultre (Antoine’s grandson) and French watchmaker Edmond Jaeger merged their companies. With more than 1,000 employees Jaeger-LeCoultre is today the largest employer in the Vallée de Joux, as it was in the nineteenth century, and it is one of the few companies that produces its own cases, dials, hands, movements, etc.
