Country: France
History: Frenchman
Alain Silberstein founded his company in 1985 in Besançon, a French “town of
art and history” in the Jura Mountains. Silberstein, a self-described
“architect of time” worked as an interior and industrial designer before
turning to watchmaking. In 1987 his watches were well-received at Baselworld.
His stylistic innovations include covering timepieces in either fur or leather,
as well as being an early believer in combining diamonds and stainless steel.
Watches by Alain Silberstein, who happens to sport a considerable mustache, are
funky and fun. They often feature bold colors (predominantly red, yellow, and
blue), squiggly lines, and an array of dynamic shapes. Silberstein became
interested in ruthenium and titanium finishings in 2007. Thereafter he launched
a new line called Basik, which featured the Marine 20, a commemorative, highly
polished titanium watch. Though the watches feature playful designs, make no
mistake, timepieces by Alain Silberstein are rigorously crafted.
