Founder: Giovanni Panerai was born in 1825. He founded the company in 1860 in Florence.
Country: Florence, Italy
History: After the company was founded in 1860, the grandson of Giovanni took over the company and began supplying the Royal Italian Navy with high precision watches around 1900. Also around that time, watches were being made for the ministry of defense. In 1910, Radiomir, the first luminescent watch was created. By 1936, the Radiomir was perfected to be used under extreme conditions and was used in submarines. The strap for the Radiomir was extra long in order to fit around the diving outfit. In 1949, the Luminor was born and it was patented as well because of its new luminous formula. Upon request of the Egyptian Navy, Officine Panerai made a Radiomir watch with an 8-day power reserve. Astoundingly, a watch was designed in 1980 that could withstand a depth of a 1000 m. Slytech watches were created in honor of Sylvester Stallone and were worn during the Daylight movie in 1995. Two years later, Richemont took over the company. In 2000, the watch that could withstand a 1000 meter depth was constructed and had a sapphire crystal thickness of 5.1 mm.
